Lone Butte and the surrounding high country of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest are defined by a network of lookouts and seasonal camps as they appeared in 2011. The landscape is dotted with prominent volcanic features such as Sawtooth Mountain, Bird Mountain, and the Twin Buttes, where both the West Twin Butte Lookout and Hungry Peak Lookout once served as critical fire observation points. The presence of the Surprise Lake Indian Camp and Meadow Creek Indian Camp suggests the enduring cultural and recreational significance of the area's high-elevation meadows and lakes.
