Indian Heaven Wilderness dominates the southern half of this landscape, a high volcanic plateau defined by a dense concentration of subalpine water bodies including Placid Lake, Chenamus Lake, and Cultus Lake. The topography is marked by distinct peaks such as Bird Mountain and Lemei Rock, which rise above the surrounding forest. The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the eastern ridge-line, passing through a network of high-elevation campsites like Cultus Creek Campground.

Resource extraction and recreation meet at Lone Butte, where the Lone Butte Quarry and Lone Butte Sno-Park sit near the transition to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Further north, the Berryfields Interpretive Site highlights the cultural significance of the berry fields near Sawtooth Mountain.
