Flathead National Forest encompasses much of this 2017 landscape, where the Salish Mountains define a high-elevation environment of drainages and lakes. Large water bodies like Ashley Lake and the smaller Lone Lake and Lake Monroe are the primary features of the topography, connected by a network of seasonal and permanent watercourses including Ashley Creek and Hodge Creek. The map shows a clear division between these preserved forest lands and the surveyed boundaries of Townships 27 through 29 North.
