Lone Tree Creek and its neighboring drainages define the landscape of this corner of Carter County, where Montana's high plains meet established ranching routes. The drainage patterns of Cottonwood Creek and Hackberry Creek illustrate the natural erosion of the territory north of the Ekalaka area. Evidence of early land management and access is visible through the Sheep Mountain Road and Chimney Rock Road, which traverse the township boundaries of T4S R60E and T5S R60E. This 2017 survey shows how the local geography remained largely undeveloped, with property access following the natural contours of the hills and creek beds that have sustained the region's cattle and sheep operations for generations.
