Tipler and the surrounding north woods of Florence and Forest counties were defined by the timber and rail economy of the late 1930s. The Chicago and Northwestern railroad tracks serve a network of specialized sidings and industrial spurs, including Lindels Spur, Quinlan Spur, and Moore & Montambo Spur, which supported local logging operations. This landscape is also a testament to the era of the Civilian Conservation Corps, with the Long Lake CCC Camp situated near the massive Halsey Lake.
