The small town of Long Lake serves as the focal point for this survey of McPherson County's glaciated prairie landscape. Established near its namesake water body, the community is defined by its rectilinear grid of streets including Main St and Penn St. The surrounding countryside is dotted with Numerous small wetlands and depressions characteristic of the Missouri Coteau region, including the larger Klooz Lake to the southwest.

Evidence of early rural life and settlement patterns is found in several scattered burial grounds, such as Salem Cem, Emmanuel Cem, and Arena Valley Cem further south. These sites, often positioned on higher ground away from the marshes, trace the genealogy of the area's farming families. Historical transportation routes are also preserved here, notably the Old Sioux Rd which cuts across the northern section, contrasting with the rigid section-line county road system like Co Hwy 8.
