North Fork Red River winds through the heart of this landscape, marking the boundary where Kiowa, Jackson, and Tillman counties meet. The terrain is defined by isolated elevations such as Dempsey Peak, Cable Mtn, and Long Mtn, which rise sharply above the surrounding plains. These geological features dictated the path of the regional road network, which largely follows a rigid section-line grid except where diverted by the river's meanders or the expanse of the Tom Steed Reservoir in the north.
