Longview and the surrounding borderlands of Burke and Catawba Counties show a landscape of growing towns and established rural crossroads during the early 1970s. The northern corridor is defined by the Southern Railroad line, which connects the industrial and municipal centers of Icard, Hildebran, and Penelope. This area exhibits a dense concentration of civic infrastructure, including the Municipal Airport, City Hall, and the Hickory Recreation Center.

Further south, the terrain becomes more varied as it descends toward the winding Henry Fork and Jacob Fork rivers. This southern portion of the quadrangle is anchored by several small rural communities and numerous landmarks for family historians, such as Advent Crossroads, Burke Chapel, and Propst Crossroads. The presence of many country churches, including South Fork Ch and Mt Harmony Ch, highlights the traditional social centers of these foothill settlements before more modern suburban development arrived.
