Avalik River meanders across the northern reaches of this Arctic territory, where the landscape is defined by subtle elevation shifts and numerous unnamed small ponds and depressions. This 2014 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey maps a section of the North Slope defined by its vast drainage patterns and the absence of established roads or permanent settlements. The topographical data reveals the winding course of the river as it flows through the northern sections of Township 8 North, Range 27 West and Township 8 North, Range 28 West. Beyond the waterway, the map is a study in remote northern geography, dominated by the low-lying tundra typical of this portion of the North Slope.
