USGS Topo · Published 1935

About this map

Clinch River meanders through the heart of this landscape, cutting past the steep ridges of Clinch Mountain and Copper Ridge. Compiled from aerial photography in the mid-1930s, this survey by the Tennessee Valley Authority and the USGS reveals a rural Appalachia defined by its narrow valleys and isolated settlements. In Poor Valley and Robinette Valley, small farming communities are anchored by numerous country schools and churches, such as Independence Sch and Freedom Ch.
