Lorado and the surrounding Arkansas landscape are defined by an extensive water management system developed along Big Creek and Mud Creek. This 2011 survey reveals a complex network of reservoirs and dams, ranging from Big Creek Site One Reservoir in the north to Big Creek Site 20 Dam in the south, illustrating the importance of flood control and water storage for the local agricultural community. Settlement patterns are focused around small crossroads and family-named locales such as Herndon, Sterling Springs, and the uniquely named Buck Snort.
