1986 Map of Lovelock Indian Caves

USGS Topo · Published 1986

About this map

The Lovelock Indian Caves occupy a prominent position within the West Humboldt Range, overlooking a complex hydrological basin where the Humboldt River terminates. This 1980s survey captures the arid landscape of the Carson Sink, a region defined by its extreme terminal drainage features and the surrounding peaks. The map reveals an intensive history of mineral exploration, evidenced by numerous Prospect and Prospects markings scattered across the slopes and flats. Human infrastructure in this desolate environment is minimal, restricted largely to 4wd tracks, a Telephone Line, and a series of Levees designed to manage water within the Humboldt Wildlife Management Area. The transition from the wetland management zones to the Mud Alkali flats illustrates the delicate balance of this Great Basin environment during the late twentieth century.
