The settlement of Lurton sits at the heart of this high-elevation terrain within the Ozark National Forest. Located along the high ridges of the Boston Mountains, the area is defined by a series of prominent peaks and deep hollows, including Sams Throne and Sassafras Knob. The mapping captures the intersection of traditional forest roads and the modern Ozark Highlands Trail, which winds through the southern portion of the sheet. Evidence of local history and family legacy is found in the Tarlton Cem near Tarlton Flats, as well as numerous geographic features named for early residents, such as Ketcherside Mtn, Greenhaw Mtn, and Daniel Mtn. These peaks are separated by drainages like Big Cr and Richland Cr, illustrating the deeply dissected plateau characteristic of this part of Arkansas.
