About this map

Hanover College and the sprawling grounds of the Madison State Hospital overlook the Ohio River in this mid-1960s topographic study. The landscape is defined by the dramatic descent from the Indiana uplands to the river bottom, marked by a series of spectacular cataracts including Deadman Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Crowe Falls. These natural features are preserved within Clifty Falls State Park, while industrial development is anchored by the Clifty Creek Powerplant near a sharp bend in the river known as the Devils Elbow.
