The high plateau of San Miguel County is deeply incised by a network of drainage systems in this 2013 survey of the area near Maes. The landscape is defined by the complex topography of numerous canyons, including Cañon Pajarita and the extensive Cañon Largo. These natural corridors historically dictated movement and settlement patterns in this part of New Mexico, where the small community of Romero and the high-elevation Juan Torres Lake serve as primary landmarks.
