Maes and its surrounding canyonlands in San Miguel County are defined by a complex network of seasonal drainages and high mesa topography. The landscape is carved by numerous namesake canyons, including Cañon Pajarita, Cañon Julian, and the extensive Cañon Largo to the southeast. These deep geographic features dictate the path of local travel, primarily along county roads like Co RD c53a which winds through the rugged terrain.
