XL Ranch Indian Res occupies the northern slopes of Hog Ridge in this high-desert landscape of Modoc County. The terrain is characterized by a sophisticated network of water management features, including the expansive Big Sage Reservoir and the Raker and Thomas Reservoirs. These sites, along with smaller catchments like Wood Flat Reservoir and Emigrant Spring Reservoir, illustrate the critical importance of water storage for local agriculture and ranching in the Modoc National Forest.

Towards the south, the settlement of Alturas and the residential area at Daphnedale Park mark the transition from the wilder uplands of Mahogany Ridge to the valley floor. Deep drainages like Swanson Canyon and Daggett Canyon cut through the volcanic plateaus, while numerous natural water sources such as Kelley Springs and Hidden Spring provided vital points of habitation and resource for both the reservation and surrounding forest lands.
