Malheur Lake dominates the upper half of this High Desert landscape, showing the expansive wetlands and fluctuating shoreline characteristic of this Harney Basin drainage. In the eastern reaches of the lake, landforms like Pelican Island and Cole Island emerge from the shallow waters, while the Malheur Slough weaves through the marshy terrain to the south. The southern portion of the quadrangle transitions into a higher volcanic relief, defined by the prominent Black Butte and the adjacent Black Butte Ridge.
