St. Joe National Forest and Clearwater National Forest meet in this high-elevation Idaho landscape, where the Shoshone and Clearwater county lines converge. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent peaks and ridges, including Mallard Peak, Crag Peak, and Black Mtn. A network of glacial tarns and mountain lakes is scattered throughout the area, notably Larkins Lake, Heart Lake, and Skyland Lake. A significant human element in this wilderness is the Surveyors Ridge Lookout 395A, perched along Surveyors Ridge near the Surveyors Ridge Rd. This area is drained by numerous steep-gradient streams such as Isabella Cr and Sawtooth Cr, illustrating the complex drainage patterns of the Bitterroot Mountains. The absence of settlements emphasizes the remote, protected character of these forest lands.
