St Joe National Forest and Clearwater National Forest meet in this high-altitude landscape along the Shoshone and Clearwater county border. The area is defined by the Mallard Larkins Pioneer Area, a protected expanse of high ridges and alpine basins. Dramatic topography radiates from summits such as Mallard Peak, Wasser Peak, and Martin Peak, while the northern portion is dominated by the prominent Sawtooth Ridge and Surveyors Ridge.

Glacial cirques throughout the range hold a high density of small mountain lakes, including Mallard Lake, Heart Lake, Blue Lake, and the Twin Lakes. These water bodies feed a complex network of drainages like Sawtooth Creek and Isabella Creek, which are marked by numerous steep drops and natural features such as Falls Creek. This mid-1990s revision by the Forest Service emphasizes the preservation of the Pioneer Area, focusing on the natural hydrology and the primitive trail system serving the Avery North Fork Ranger District.
