Bogue Sound separates the coastal mainland from the developed barrier island of Bogue Banks in this mid-1990s survey. The mainland portion is dominated by the sprawling Croatan National Forest and the eastern terminus of the Atlantic and East Carolina railroad, which serves the expanding industrial and residential footprints of Morehead City and Mansfield. Local spiritual life is anchored by St Marks Chapel near the Newport River marshes.

Across the water, the thin strip of the barrier island shows a blend of conservation and tourism. The Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area and Hoop Pole Woods preserve significant maritime forest environments adjacent to the N C Marine Resources Center. These protected lands stand in contrast to the nearby coastal communities of Pine Knoll Shores and Atlantic Beach, which front the Atlantic Ocean and Onslow Bay.
