Marble City serves as the central focal point of this 2022 survey, positioned at the foot of Quarry Mtn and Andes Mtn in Oklahoma's western Ozark foothills. The landscape is deeply carved by water, with Sallisaw Creek and Brushy Creek defining the drainages between prominent elevations like Grapevine Mtn and Ussery Mtn. This area is particularly noteworthy for its concentration of historic and cultural sites, including the Dwight Mission and several family or community burial grounds such as Flute Springs Cem and McCoy Cem. The terrain structure reveals a transition from the higher peaks of the Brushy Mountains in the northeast to the Brushy Creek Reservoir in the south, reflecting a settlement pattern dictated by the narrow valleys and ridges of the region.
