Mares Egg Spring emerges at the eastern base of the Cascade Range, where the steep timbered slopes of the Winema National Forest meet the flat reclaimed marshlands of the Wood River Valley. This landscape is defined by its transition from the Sky Lakes Wilderness down to a complex network of agricultural irrigation and water management. Numerous water sources including Blue Springs, Fourmile Springs, and Jack Spring feed into a system of man-made structures like the Sevenmile Canal and Melhase Ditch.
