Marion and its eastern suburbs form a dense corridor of residential and industrial development in this 2019 survey of McDowell County. The landscape is defined by the transition from the organized grid of Clinchfield and Stumptown to the high, wooded peaks of Gibbs Mtn and Reedy Mtn. In the northern portion of the map, the waters of Lake James wrap around Big Island, where the Pisgah National Forest provides a protected contrast to the growing residential developments along the shoreline.
