La Quinta marks the northern edge of this study, where the developed landscape of the Coachella Valley meets the high, complex topography of the San Bernardino National Forest. The elevation rises sharply toward the south and west, dominated by the massif of Martinez Mtn and the neighboring Sheep Mtn. This area is defined by its dramatic verticality, carved by deep drainage systems like Martinez Canyon and Devil Canyon.
