The South Loup River winds through the southern reaches of this landscape, carving a valley between the dissected uplands of Buffalo and Custer counties. This 2014 survey captures the rural character of the Nebraska loess hills, where the terrain is marked by the broad Black Hill Basin and a network of ephemeral drainages including Black Hill Cr and Stoddard Cr. The drainage patterns here are complex, with small tributaries like Blk Cr and Oak Cr feeding into larger systems that eventually reach the Loup River valley.
