Challis National Forest encompasses the high-altitude terrain of the Lost River Range in this modern topographic study of Custer County. The landscape is defined by massive peaks and glacial features, including the prominent Castle Peak and Massacre Mtn. A network of alpine water bodies, such as Swauger Lakes, Shadow Lakes, and Nolan Lake, are fed by numerous high-elevation drainages like Long Lost Creek and Upper Cedar Cr. The map highlights the primitive access routes that penetrate this backcountry, notably the Swauger Lake Spur 1. From the depths of Hell Canyon to the sawtooth ridges of the continental divide, the survey captures the hydrologic patterns and vertical relief of one of Idaho's most demanding environments as it appeared in 2020.
