Matheny Ridge dominates this interior portion of the Olympic Peninsula, serving as a high divide between the water systems of the Sams River to the north and Matheny Creek to the south. This 1990 provisional survey documents a landscape defined by jurisdictional boundaries and drainage patterns, where the Olympic National Park meets the Olympic National Forest. To the south, the terrain descends toward the Quinault Indian Reservation, marked by the confluence of the North Fork Salmon River and Middle Fork Salmon River.
