Matlock Prairie and the surrounding high-altitude grasslands of the Umatilla National Forest dominate this 2014 survey. The landscape is defined by a series of open meadows and upland grazing areas, including Balsinger Prairie, Kenny Prairie, and North Jones Prairie, which appear as distinct clearings among the timbered slopes. This region in the Blue Mountains transition reflects a long history of seasonal land use, where numerous natural springs such as Sulphur Spring and Deadhorse Spring provide critical water sources in a high-desert environment.
