Mayfield and the surrounding Yankton County township are defined by a grid of section roads and the winding path of the James River. This 2015 U.S. Geological Survey map documents the agricultural landscape of southeastern South Dakota, where several drainage systems converge. Smoky Run, Clay Cr, and Mud Cr carve subtle valleys through the prairie, feeding into the larger river system that dominates the western edge of the quadrangle.
