The St Joe Mountains form a dramatic natural boundary in this high-altitude survey of the borderlands between Mineral and Shoshone Counties. Spanning the divide between Montana and Idaho, the landscape is defined by the high crests of McGee Peak and Ward Peak, which separate the drainages of the Lolo National Forest from those of the St Joe National Forest. The network of water bodies, including the West Fork and Middle Fork of Big Creek, illustrates a complex alpine watershed where several glacial tarns like Gold Lake and Crystal Lake are tucked into the high cirques.
