About this map

Lake Ouachita dominates the northern reaches of this landscape, its complex shoreline creating numerous peninsulas and inlets within the Ouachita National Forest. The settlement of Joplin sits centrally along US Hwy 270, serving as a primary corridor through the mountainous terrain. This area is defined by its significant relief, where McGraw Mountain, Crystal Mtn, and Hickorynut Mtn provide the high points between the drainage basins of Gap Cr and Irons Cr. Local history is preserved in several small burial grounds, including Joplin Cem and Murphy Cem, which are tucked away near these creek valleys. The presence of the Double Clear Fork Reservoir and a dedicated Fish Hatchery reflects the region's managed water resources and its shift toward recreational and conservation-based land use in the early 21st century.
