The De Soto National Forest blankets much of the terrain in this region, where the Biloxi River and its numerous tributaries like Mill Creek and Hickory Creek define the landscape. Small settlements and cemeteries are tucked into the wooded intervals, including McHenry and Howison along the Old Hwy 49 corridor. The area's local history is anchored by several family and community burial grounds such as Hickman Cem and the D C Wedgeworth Cem.
