The Mcveigh Hills rise above a landscape defined by an arid water management network in this high-desert portion of the New Mexico-Texas borderlands. The terrain is deeply incised by several prominent drainage courses, including North Draw, Chess Draw, and the wide path of Cornudas Draw. Human presence is marked primarily by the livestock-oriented "tank" infrastructure essential to ranching in the Otero County and Hudspeth County region. Named water catchments such as Brushy Tank, Mule Tank, and C C C Tank appear alongside the prominent elevations of Black Mtn and Chatfield Mtn. The transport network relies on a grid of county roads, most notably Dell City Rd, which cuts across the central draws to connect this ranching landscape with the broader Chihuahuan Desert region.
