The Indian River Lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway define the geography of this Atlantic coastal region, separating the mainland settlements of Melbourne and Palm Bay from the barrier island communities. The map highlights the extensive modern infrastructure of the Space Coast, including the campus of the Florida Institute of Technology and the Keiser Univ Melbourne Campus.

On the barrier island, the towns of Indialantic and Melbourne Beach are situated along the narrow strip between the lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, marked by landmarks such as Fisherman Point and Bluefish Point.
