Mercer serves as the central hub of this lake-strewn landscape in the Northwoods, where the Turtle River winds through a dense network of glacial water bodies and marshes. The settlement pattern follows the contours of the land, with homes and camps concentrated along the shores of Spider Lake, Grand Portage Lake, and Pike Lake. Significant local history is preserved at the Mercer Cem and along the former industrial corridors now designated as Railroad Grade 2. Toward the southern edge of the quadrangle, the community of Manitowish marks a secondary point of settlement near the riverbanks.
