Mesa marks a high point in this ranching landscape where Chaves and De Baca counties meet. The terrain is defined by complex water management for livestock, featuring numerous named earthen reservoirs like Olas Tank, Jugs Tank, and the uniquely named Bomb Target Tank. These water sources are critical in an area where the Middle Fork Fivemile Draw and Fifteenmile Arroyo provide the primary natural drainage through a landscape of broad mesas and hidden canyons. Local topography is anchored by Poquita Mesa in the northeast and the depths of Burts Canyon to the south. A network of rural roads including Stargrass Rd and Butterweed Rd connect these remote outposts, following the contours of the high desert plateau.
