Mesa Cherisco dominates the western half of this landscape, its steep contours rising above the drainage systems of eastern New Mexico. This 2013 survey illustrates the sparse, high-plains settlement pattern of the region, where ranching outposts like Boylan Ranch and Pino Ranch are anchored by water sources and seasonal creek beds. The drainage network is clearly defined by Pino Cr, Garita Cr, and Cherisco Cr, which converge as they move east toward the boundary between San Miguel and Guadalupe counties.
