The Atlantic coast of Accomack County is defined here by a complex network of barrier islands, tidal guts, and shallow bays. Along the western edge, fingers of land including Parker Neck, Baylys Neck, and Joynes Neck extend into the marshes, separated by tidal waters like Parker Creek and Walston Creek. These necks show sparse development, marked only by scattered structures and a few small cemeteries.

To the east, the fragile barrier of Metomkin Island and Cedar Island shields the mainland from the Atlantic Ocean. The shifting sands of Metomkin Inlet separate these two islands, providing a passage for several interior navigation routes such as Warwick Channel and Running Channel. Near the northern tip of Cedar Island, a Coast Guard Station stands as a sentinel over this hazardous marine environment, where intricate waterways like Muddy Thrash Gut and Sloop Channel thread through the expansive salt marshes.
