Mexican Buttes and the neighboring Twin Buttes rise above the high plains of eastern Montana, where the border between Treasure County and Yellowstone County cuts through the northern reaches of this landscape. The terrain is defined by a network of drainage systems including Butte Cr and the various branches of Horse Creek, such as N Fork Horse Cr and Middle Fork Horse Cr. This 2017 survey details a region shaped by land use and topography rather than dense settlement, with high points like Bender Hill and Ninemile Hill providing orientation across the open range. The historic path of Musselshell Trail Rd winds through the central and southern portions of the map, following the natural contours of the land in a way that recalls older routes through the Big Sky country.
