The Missouri River creates a dramatic boundary between Carroll and Saline Counties as it winds through this portion of central Missouri. The town of Miami occupies a high point overlooking the river valley, where navigation is marked by distinct features such as Upper Miami Bend and Lower Miami Bend. The landscape transitions from the broad alluvial plain of the Wakenda Chute and Wakenda Creek in the northwest to the more varied terrain of the south, characterized by Coon Hollow and numerous small drainages like Belt Br and Muddy Cr.
