The rolling coulee country of the La Crosse Co and Monroe Co border comes into focus in this recent study, centered on the unincorporated settlement of Middle Ridge. The landscape is defined by its deep, narrow valleys or "coulees," including Darling Coulee, Sedevie Coulee, and Pinkish Coulee, which create a complex drainage pattern feeding into Dutch Cr and Coon Cr. Historically, this area has maintained its rural character, anchored by local sites like Saint Peter's Cem and North Ridge Cem. The transition from the high ground of Fish Creek Ridge to the lowlands of Jenkins Valley and Bohemian Valley illustrates the topographic variety of this unglaciated region. A dense network of county roads and family-named routes, such as Kirkeng Rd and George Schoeder Rd, connects scattered farmsteads and agricultural plots across the ridge and valley terrain.
