The Milan city center straddles the county line where the Saline River flows through the border of Washtenaw and Monroe Counties. This 2014 survey captures a landscape defined by an extensive network of managed waterways, including the McIntyre Drain, Cone Drain, and Nolan Engle Drain, which support the surrounding agricultural fields. The settlement pattern remains centered on the rail corridor at Milan Station, with the smaller communities of Mooreville to the northwest and Azalia to the southeast serving as secondary hubs.
