Pine Mtn anchors the western edge of this High Desert landscape, where the volcanic terrain of the Deschutes National Forest meets the open rangeland of central Oregon. The topography is defined by significant relief, featuring the sprawling Kotzman Basin and the elevated stretch of Pine Ridge. Water is a scarce and precious resource in this arid environment, evidenced by the presence of the ephemeral Dry River and the isolated Whitaker Holes. A network of remote corridors, including Moffitt Rd, Fox Butte Rd, and Newt Morris Rd, provides access across the various townships and ranges. This 2017 survey captures a largely undeveloped wilderness area, illustrating the land use patterns within federal forest boundaries and the surrounding public lands.
