The Yampa River flows westward through the northern reaches of this Colorado landscape, passing the small settlement of Milner and the nearby location of McGregor. This area of Routt County is defined by a network of drainage systems including Trout Cr and Elk Cr that feed into the river valley. To the south, the topography transitions into the expansive Twentymile Park, a notable lowland feature flanked by numerous gulches like Coal View Gulch and Little Butcherknife Gulch.
