Pine Valley serves as the central geographic focus of this mid-1980s provisional study, located along the border of Nevada and Eureka County. The landscape is defined by its drainage systems, with Pine Creek and its many tributaries, such as Sheep Creek and Lamb Creek, cutting through the terrain. A notable historical transport feature is the Old Railroad Grade, which parallels the valley floor and indicates the earlier industrial and transit corridors of the region.
