About this map

The Wynoochee River and Satsop River basins dominate this mid-century topographic study of Grays Harbor County. This landscape is defined by the industrial footprint of the Pacific Northwest timber trade, clearly marked by the extensive operations of the Simpson Logging Company and Schafer Brothers Logging Company. These logging interests carved numerous transportation routes through the hills, including a network of truck trails and the Deckerville Road. Small settlements like Mobray and Monte appear along the river valleys, surrounded by a dense web of tributaries such as Black Creek and Wedekind Creek. Near the southern edge of the survey, Sylvia Lake and Sylvia Creek provide a distinct contrast to the winding river forks that drain the northern ridges. This 1939 topography, based on 1937 aerial photography, captures the timber economy at its peak before later developments altered the river corridors.
