Lake Montauk dominates the center of this coastal survey, where the protected waters of Montauk Harbor provide a deep-water refuge for vessels between Gardiners Bay and Block Island Sound. The eastern tip of Long Island is characterized by its complex hydrology, featuring numerous kettle ponds like Oyster Pond, Big Reed Pond, and Little Reed Pond scattered across the glacial moraine. Settlement is concentrated near the Montauk Station rail terminus and along the southern shore at Montauk Beach and Ditch Plains.
