2023 Map of Montauk Point

About this map

Long Island tapers to its eastern extremity here, where the land is defined by a complex network of glacial ponds and maritime settlements. The interior is dominated by Lake Montauk, which is sheltered from Block Island Sound by Star Island and a narrow harbor entrance. Along the southern coast, the development of Montauk Beach and Ditch Plains follows the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean, while the Montauk Station near Fort Pond serves as the terminus for the rail line. Evidence of the area's deep history is preserved at Fort Hill Cem overlooking the bay. The landscape transitions from the residential grids of Montauk to the more open, pond-dotted terrain of the east, including Little Reed Pond, Big Reed Pond, and Oyster Pond near the point. This survey illustrates the modern layout of the peninsula, balancing the established village center with large preserved coastal features like Hither Hills.
