Lake Tillery and the meandering Pee Dee River define this section of the Piedmont where Stanly, Montgomery, Anson, and Richmond counties meet. The town of Norwood sits on the western heights above the lake, while Mount Gilead occupies the eastern edge of the quadrangle. The landscape is a network of small watercourses like Clarks Creek and Buffalo Creek that carve into the surrounding hills, including the prominent Morgan Mtn in the north.
